July 2-16, 2007

Course Description

INSTRUCTOR: Prof. David Watson, The Hartt School at the University of Hartford

Theater/Italian Comedy:
This two week intensive acting workshop will focus on the essential techniques of comedy and character developed first in the commedia and still practiced on today’s stage and camera. Through exercises, students will learn to act and develop a character through the use of masks based on a traditional commedia character. These characters will be further developed through improvisation as well as comic “routines” called lazzi into the performance of scenes from a traditional commedia play. Students will also study the history and development of the commedia, its roots in Italian culture and its place in the tradition of great world theater.

College Credit through the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will be available.
