THE MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION is an interdisciplinary organization which promotes the scholarly study of the Mediterranean region in all aspects and disciplines. In addition to its Annual International Congress, the MSA also publishes the journal Mediterranean Studies in cooperation with Manchester University Press. Since 2000, in cooperation with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the MSA has sponsored a Summer Sicily Program which has served several hundred students since it inception. In 2003 the MSA received the prestigious Stella de Oro awardfrom the European Parliament for its contributions to international understanding and education. With that award the MSA also received use of a renovated 12th Century castle in Nocciano, Italy (see www.mediterraneanstudies.net). The result was the establishment in 2004 of the Nocciano Institute for the Arts and Culture. Now in its 4th year, the Institute provides high school students the opportunity to live in a foreign culture and participate in educational experiences such as painting and theater.

Given the MSAユs association with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and its Center for Portuguese Studies & Culture, the MSA has developed a deep relationship with the Portuguese community. The first MSA Congress was held in Lisbon in 1998, the 1999 Congress in Coimbra, and the 2007 Congress was at the University of プora. As part of that 10th anniversary celebration, the MSA agreed that in cooperation with the University of プora it would initiate the new program announced here.
